DESCRIPTION

This Salkantay trek 4 days and 3 nights is the short version of these fascinating trek to Machu Picchu and it is NOT ONLY the most famous alternative trek, This Salkantay trek is nowadays one the most spectacular trails to do a hike on the middle of the Andes with a lot of mega diversity and natural beauty, the trek road is crossing the Andes Mountain Range called Vilcabamba zone.

The trek passes through stunning landscapes varying from the cloud forest to the high mountains. Along the way are fantastic sceneries of glacier cooper highest mountain in Cusco area, a remote and ancient footpath in the same region of the Inca trail, but less crowed, this trip offering spectacular views you never sow in your entire life, Salkantay (“Savage Mountain”) standing at 6,271 m/19.685 ft. This tour is for the adventurous.

Overview

Day 1CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – CHALLACANCHA – SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY PAMPA.

Pickup from your hotel at 5:00 am.
Private transportations to trail head, about 2 hours in a half to Mollepata village, here we will have a chance to have a breakfast in a local restaurant.
And then half hour more driving to the start point of our trek, named Challacancha.
Weather, to be honest is always changing from hot in the morning and cold in the afternoon sometimes very cold at night, this is the area where easily can rain, snow, hail even in the dry season.
Explore the most beautiful lake of Humantay, after lunch.
Camping spot called Salkantay pampa.
Walking Distance in first day – 15km / 9 miles.
Elevation changes in the hike since: Cusco 3335 m = 10941 ft. to Challacancha 3715 m = 12188 ft.
Campsite Elevation – 4100 m = 13451 ft.
Considered: Acclimatization easy day.

Day 2SALKANTAY PAMPA –HIGHEST SALKANTAY PASS – CHAULLAY OR COLLPAPAMPA.

Hiking Challenger day but breathtaking views in the entire trip.
Walking Distance – 20 km = 12 mi.
Starting Elevation – since 4100 m = 13451 ft.
Highest Elevation Salcantay pass – 4627 m = 15180 ft.
Campsite Elevation –3800 m = 12467 ft.
Considered: Moderate one of the most beautiful day, we can see the Salkantay magnificent glacier mountain.

Day 3CHAULLAY – LA PLAYA – SAHUAYACO (SHORT CLOUDY FOREST)

Trekking in to the kind of tropical place (cloud forest) beautiful orchids.
Walking Distance – 24 km / 14 miles.
Starting Elevation 2900 m = 9514 ft.
Lunch spot elevation –2070 m = 6791 ft.
Aguas Calientes Hotel Elevation –2040 m = 6692 ft.
Considered: easy hike but long day.
Look out we provided you Breakfast, lunch, (dinner it´ll be in local restaurant).
The Area: Cloud Forest usually very warm weather.

Day 4MACHU PICCHU! – CUSCO.

Early wake up, if we want to be in to the firsts people, who will see Machu Picchu and enjoy without many people yet.
Bus up or walk to get of Machu Picchu it is optional.

We will have a chance to enjoy the sunrise in to the wonderful Incan city, if we will be early and have a good weather !!of course!
Guiding tour with very good explanations of Your trekking tour guide in Machu Picchu.

We can climb one of the extra mountain Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (if we booked it in advance) this is in your free time and by yourself.
After everything we can get to Aguas Calientes City for lunch by walk or bus.
Train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo 2 hours about.
Private car from Ollantaytambo to Cusco it’ll be waiting with your names and drop you off at the Hotel.

Train times are at 18:30 pm based on train availability or could be change we will let you know in your pre departure briefing before start the trip.

Itinerary

Day 1CUSCO – SALKANTAY PAMPA.

We will pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 a.m. to drive for about 2 hours to Mollepata village. Here we’ll stop in a local restaurant and have breakfast, and then we’ll continue drive for half hour more to the start point of our Salkantay trek, from a place named Challancha. As soon as we get there we’ll find a horseman who is going to waiting for us, he and our cook they will pack all the camping equipment and cooking stuff, we will give them our duffel bags, they are going to take care of our extra staff and our everyday food, so we will start hiking together with our tour guide who will be responsible of our hiking group, the first 1/2 hours will be a little bit uphill to get Inca Canal where we will have a spectacular and brief taking lands escapes, from here is easy till lunch spot named Soraypampa (3800 m/11750 ft.); after enjoy a very delicious Peruvian food we will hike up to the beautiful snow- mountains Lake of (Humantay; 4120 m/13500 ft.)

After take a good rest in the Humantay lake we have to continue for about 2 more hours to our camping spot, we will walk dawn close to the lunch spot and continue walk up hill till Salkantay pampa here we will be very close to the highest Salkantay snow-capped mountain and less crow because most of croups are camping in the place call soraypampa.

We use this day to get a good acclimation that is reason we try make a kind of easy day, and we are not put you directly to the highest pass like other companies do, like this you can be more prepared for the second day and cross easy the highest pass and we always camp in very exclusive places with less people to enjoy more the nature on theentire trip.

1RST DAY: Total distance: 15 km / 9 miles. (approx.)

Day 2SALKANTAY PAMPA – CHAULLAY.

After having our breakfast, we start walking early, because this day will be the longest but the most beautiful and spectacular day crossing the Andes mountain ranges, our first 3 hours it´ll be uphill to get the highest point of the Trek (4650m/15200ft) located between 2 hugest mountains; Salkantay on the right and Tucarhuay on the left. By the way we will have a lot of opportunities to take wonderful pictures, once we get the top is even better landscapes of the glaciers, definitely spectacular. There is always a possibility of snow, rain, hail that is the reason we have to go always ready for the four seasons.

After the little break, enjoying snaks and very nice explanations of our tour guide about the local traditions, religious of local people, we will continue our walk (downhill) through a dramatic cloud forest towards named Huayracmachay Quechua language means (The shelter of the wind), about 2 hours later we will have a very good lunch. We´ll hike about 3 more hours after delicious lunch in the direction of the jungle´s beginning till we reach our second Salkantay Trek camping spot called Chaullay or Colpampampa (3000m/9800ft).

2 ND DAY: Total distance: 20 km/ 12 mi. (approx.)

Campsite altitude: 2,900 m/ 9514 ft. (approx.)

Day 3CHAULLAY – LA PLAYA – LUCMABAMABA (CLOUD FOREST)

After breakfast, we will say thank you so much to the horseman and take the last pictures with him, because from here there a car service already all our equipment it´ll be carrying on the car, we will start an easier day not many uphill today, only about 15 km / 9 miles to the lunch spot, this it´ll be walking through the upper part of the jungle crossing the Lluskamayo River and a variety of little brooks to reach Lucmabanba walking about 6 hours. Today we will pass through valleys and have wonderful views of waterfalls, tropical fruits and more different type of plants fully of vegetation, as soon as we will get Lucmabamba our Cook is going to waiting with amazing food, this is a small village one of the places around Machu Picchu produce ecological coffee so we will see a lot of coffee bushes, this is the place where we will say good bay to the Cook because after lunch we will take a local transportation and drive for about 1: 20 minutes to the place know Hidroelectrica, in the afternoon we will continue keep walking about three more hours along the train track till reaching Aguas Calientes town where we will spend the night in a good hostel and have dinner in a good local restaurant, this is the place where we will organize everything for the 4th day. Machu Picchu.

Nota Optional: from Hidroelectrica you can catch a train instead to walk the last 3 hours around the train track, train price it is cost 29 USD and takes about 45 minutes to get Aguas Calientes and you can take advantage of this and enjoy of the thermal springs in the town (entrance 10 soles) a real treat after finishing the Salkantay Trek covering more 63 km or 39 mi. longest.

3 RD DAY: Total Walking Distance – 24 km / 14 miles.
Estimated walking time: 9-10 hours
Maximum altitude point: 2,900 m/ 9514 ft. (approx.)
Aguas Calientes Hotel Elevation –2040 m = 6692 ft.
Trekking in to the kind of tropical place (cloud forest) beautiful orchids.

Lunch spot elevation –2070 m = 6791 ft.
Considered: easy hike but long day, after lunch is a hike on the train track but is so beautiful around Machu Picchu.

Day 4AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU!!! – CUSCO.

Salkantay trek very important day, in going to depending of the different options we´ll choose we wake up early morning about 4 am to start walking at 4:30 dawn hill the first half hour and them uphill per about one hour to the main gate of Machu Picchu, but there is another option instead to walk, to catch bus on of the first buses which leaves 5:30 to Machu Picchu (25-minutes long) in order to appreciate the magnificent city as soon as the sun is rising.

All together after already use restrooms, because toilets are located only outside the park, we will enjoy of the Guiding tour and exploring the most important sites in to the Machu Picchu, after this you can explore the mysterious city by yourselves. If you still have energy you can also climb Huaynapicchu (2720m/8890ft)!!! It takes 45 minutes to reach the top or the not very famous Machu Picchu Mountain it takes about one and half hour to get the top. And after enjoying everything you have to go down to Aguas Calientes to take the train back to Ollantaytambo and then bus back Cusco.
